Computer Safety Doesn't Have to Be Complicated

The CBC Client Safety Center brings together practical information designed to help you recognize common dangers, make safer decisions and know what steps to take if you're concerned about your computer or an unexpected situation.

Stop. Think. Verify.

Many online threats depend on getting you to react quickly. Giving yourself a moment to think can make a big difference.

1

Stop

Don't let an unexpected message, warning, phone call or pop-up pressure you into taking immediate action.

2

Think

Ask yourself whether the situation makes sense. Be especially cautious when someone creates fear, urgency or asks for money, passwords or remote access.

3

Verify

Independently verify what's happening. Go directly to the company's official website, contact the organization yourself, or ask CBC if you're unsure.

IMPORTANT REMINDER

You Don't Have to Make a Decision Immediately.

Legitimate companies generally don't need you to panic. If a message, phone call, pop-up or website is pressuring you to act immediately, stop and verify what's happening before proceeding.
